Punjab Kings have named Shreyas Iyer as captain for IPL 2025

Iyer previously won an IPL trophy. He helped his former team, KKR, do so in 2024. PBKS, which needed a captain, acquired Shreyas for INR 26.75 crore in the mega auction. In doing so, they fared well against the competition from DC.

For Iyer, Punjab Kings is the third club in the Indian Premier League. He has been playing in this tournament since 2015 for DC and KKR. In 2018, Shreyas captained DC, and his team made the post-season three years in a row. In 2020, it finished in second place. This season, Iyer helped Mumbai win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was also one of the best players in the competition, with 345 points.

In Punjab Kings, Iyer will once again face Ricky Ponting. He is the former Australian national squad captain who became the head coach of PBKS for the next four seasons. Ponting had earlier hinted that Shreyas could become the leader. He said he had wanted to collaborate with the player again for a long time. He noted he appreciated Shreyas’ human and athletic qualities. Iyer was also the captain of KKR, who became IPL champions in 2024. So, he has leadership skills and winning ambitions.

As Ricky Ponting stated, “Shreyas has the right mentality to be the team’s leader. He is familiar with the role and will help PBKS.” The coach is enthusiastic about the new seasons due to the team’s strength and the emergence of a new leader, Iyer.
