BCCI May Impose Pay Cuts for Indian Team Players

The Indian Board of Control for Cricket may soon introduce a new payment system for Indian players. The payments will be based on performance and may be reduced in case of defeat.

BCCI May Impose Pay Cuts for Indian Team Players

Reasons for working out the new payout system

The BCCI was concerned about creating a new payout structure after the Indian team’s poor results in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. India’s recent defeats to New Zealand (0:3) and Australia (1:3) have reinforced the officials about the need for change. Players are expected to depend on their performance in the new payout structure. Poor results could result in a reduction in payouts.

The fresh payment system is expected to make players responsible for their results. It may include not only a significant reduction in match fees. According to some insiders, a stricter demotion structure may also be introduced for cricketers within the central contracts. Thus, officials want to motivate Indian cricketers to perform better.

Discussion continues

We recall that in 2024, the BCCI presented an incentive structure for Test Indian players. Those who participated in 50% of the matches or more since the start of the 2022-23 season were offered Rs 30 lakh. If the cricketers played 75% of the matches or more, the amount was increased to Rs 45 lakh per match. This existing system can be supplemented with a new structure depending on the players’ results.

It must be noted that the discussion on the new payout system is still ongoing. We must wait to see whether the potential salary reduction will improve the players’ performances. Soon, India will play England in a limited-overs series. These matches are essential for a squad that aims to overcome recent setbacks and regain its status as a leader in international cricket.
